This week as been pretty amazing. I think team morale is higher than ever. Part of this is because we are nearing the end of the year and folks are starting to look back and see the list of things we have accomplished this year. The legal and finance team has a goal chart and when we initially started listing our goals for the year. At first they seemed insurmountable, but now that we are in Q4 I am reviewing with each member of the team the things that they need to do to make it to the final stretch. The list of outstanding items is shorter than even I expected. I guess this is proof that when set the bar high and dream big things can really come together. It is also a sign that next year we need to set our goals even higher to achieve even more.

This week so much happened on the legal and finance team. It was a whirlwind. I am really excited about all of the long-term projects that are starting to come to light and are nearing the finish line. I think these kinds of projects help keep the team eager and focused. I think completing long-term projects that relate to organization also helps the team to feel like we are officially getting ahead of the work instead of always working from emergency to emergency. It was a great feeling this week to have several people ask for help preparing documents that we anticipated that they would need and had already prepared in advance. Great morale boost! I am so pleased with how our team is coming together.

This week tensions were high because we have so many big projects and deadlines. Despite the high stress, I had a moment of clarity and realized how far we have come towards our goal and was proud knowing that so many companies haven’t even made it as far as we have. We are close to going public and getting our license. These goals are well within our reach and we believe them to be attainable – one year ago we weren’t even focused on such challenges. So this upcoming week my message for the team is that the next summit might seem out of reach but we just have to keep climbing.

We are in the process of adding several new team members. Most of this growth will be within the product and business development group. This time last year we had about 5 full-time employees, and we were working out of Dooma’s basement. We will have about 20 full-time employees soon, and I am sometimes shocked at our progress. But this is only the beginning! By the end of the year we plan to have beer (alcoholic) in stores. It is great to see our plans coming to fruition.

This week we saw the first bit of skeptical press. It made some people on our team nervous, but I think we all eventually come to the conclusion that this skepticism is one of the first signs that our products and company are getting closer to becoming mainstream. If you are a small fish and no one is concerned about your product no one will take the time to criticize, but as we come closer to centerstage there will be more and more “haters.” This is a great sign!

Team morale is something I am consistently focused on. This focus comes as a result of a deep conviction that as a start-up we can’t take for granted one person, because we depend so heavily on every person working at Province. I like to think of these kind of relationships as an exchange - you give as much as you receive - and that means the more you have to give the more you can take without becoming a user of people. We depend on everyone on the team so much that it is important for us as founders to make sure that the our team members are also getting what they need from the exchange. We want a well balanced equation.

So what does all of this mean in practice? It means that occasionally we as leaders have to stop and assess what employees need to thrive in their roles. Lately, this has manifested itself in an update of our HR policies. Soon it will be reflected in the updated computer systems. The team is even going to axe-throwing this week as corporate development activity!

We welcome your ideas as investors on how to keep a well-balanced equation.

Our Business Development and Fundraising Team is always working hard, but this week I have to commend them and their hard work on closing a few large investors. We rarely stop to recognize milestones because there is always a new mountain to climb, but I would like to acknowledge what a great job the team is doing.

I had my first (short) vacation in almost two years. I think sometimes we forget how much you need to take a break to maintain your stamina to continue to keep up the pace. No time off  impacts health, our relationships, our personal well being and adds stress. I feel rejuvenated, and I am really glad that I took some time for family.

We have unlimited vacation at Province and often these kinds of policies result in employees taking less time off. So our leadership team is trying to set a good example to take care of ourselves. Check out this article on the topic. It helped inform my knowledge about unlimited vacation.

This week has been pretty tumultuous – filled with highs and lows! To me those are the best kinds of weeks because it is a sign of extreme growth. For the Legal and Finance Team, we are under extreme pressure to make sure that the company (a) gets a license to process marijuana oils, (b) goes public through the CBC vehicle; and (c) finds a path to market for the company to sell our alcoholic beer by the year end. We are getting so close to each goal that it is exhilarating. This week we found two new paths to quickly get our Cambridge Bay beer on shelves that we hadn’t previously considered! The team worked hard to find loopholes and work on creative strategies and came up with a win.

We have two interns who will be sitting for the bar exam this week. They still worked hard and gave us help in their spare time after studying. We have such a dedicated team.

For the last few weeks, our Founder’s team has been in the midst of making a series of huge decisions for the company.

We have been offered opportunities to merge with other companies, build out a brewery from scratch with an establish LP at our side, and so many other options. Each path would present a unique set of challenges and risks.

I’ve said before that in our industry everything is changing at lighting speed. The infancy of the industry means we can’t always rely on precedent so we have to make decisions based on intuition.

This week we had all the founders in one place and it was exciting to be working together. One thing that was especially exciting about having the leaders in the same vicinity was the ways in which our strengths (and shortcomings) compliment each other was on full display. We work as a team well because each founder is never afraid to listen to their internal voice and take the helm in areas where we are strong.

“Leadership is a lot about listening to yourself... Be brave with your decision even if it goes against the grain.” -Kit Crawford, Co-Owner of Clif Bar & Company

Things are so busy sometimes that is hard to stay focused. So I will keep my update this week succinct. I am consistently amazed by how our team comes together to get things done when the going gets tough. This week we had a new team member join the legal team and everyone has been helping him get acclimated. No one is competing, no one is unwelcoming. It is amazing to see how people who are focused on a goal only care about the work and not about egos. This kind of ethos permeates all parts of our team and keeps me inspired.

This past week we learned that several of you received emails from Alex Halperin inquiring about members of our team at Province Brands, specifically Dooma Wendschuh.

You may have heard Dooma mention Alex in the past. A long time ago, Rolling Stone hired Alex to write an article about Dooma and his previous cannabis company. The piece that Alex ended up writing was negative and challenged Dooma’s veracity and ethics.

All of us here at Province who have worked with Dooma can attest to the fact that the person Alex describes in his piece is unrecognizable to us. In fact, the person he paints is so far from the person that we work with on an everyday basis that we feel confident that Alex was misled by some of his sources. Thankfully, Rolling Stone agrees with us; they refused to publish Alex’s work after their fact-checking department invalidated it. Their position only solidifies what we already know to be true about Dooma. The proposed article was later published on a less reputable outlet/blog.

It seems that once again, Alex has received misleading information about Dooma from one of Dooma's former business partners. We believe that Alex wants to build a story around the information he has received without regard to its validity and that is why you may have received an email from him.

You may be wondering why I am writing this post. Well, one of our values at Province is “SINCERITY.” This value requires that:

We are honest in our dealings with each other and with all outside parties.
We do what is just.
We do what is right
We practice radical transparency.
We keep no secrets from our teammates.

Alex’s blog posts won’t even register on the scale of obstacles we’ll face as a company as we continue our mission to change the world. Even so, in our aim to maintain radical transparency, we believe it is important to provide insight about this particular obstacle. Whenever you do something bold, things like this may happen.

If you have any questions about any of this, do not hesitate to call. You can reach me at +1 678-357-2310, or email me at jennifer@provincebrands.com to schedule a time.

Thank you for your continued support of Province.

"If you ever find a man who is better than you are - hire him. If necessary, pay him more than you would pay yourself.''

"I am not the smartest, but I surround myself with competent people."

"If you always hire people who are smaller than you, we shall become a company of dwarfs. If, on the other hand, you always hire people who are bigger than you, we shall become a company of giants."

Henry Ford is the person that these quotes/concepts are attributed to. I say concepts because some historians have had a difficult time verifying what he actually said and when.

I share them as my update this week because these concepts are very relevant to the company at this stage in our growth. Ford’s quotes were mentioned on one of our team meetings a few weeks ago, and I have been finding inspiration from them more and more lately.

The mention of Ford pushed me to do a bit more digging...

One thing that I found pretty applicable to where we are as a company was Ford’s initial struggles to get a license in his industry.

Just a short time after Ford incorporated his company the then existing auto industry association  threatened to put him out of business because he was not a licensed manufacturer. He had been denied a license by this group, which aimed at reserving for its members the profits of what was fast becoming a major industry.

Ford fought back hard. This struggle pitted his new company against an industry worth millions of dollars. The gathering of evidence and actual court hearings took six years. Ford lost the original case; he appealed and won the second case.

I take away two things from Ford’s struggle. First, never be afraid to take on an industry giant or to shake up a pre-existing industry. The fight is always worth it. Second, sometimes we forget that the fight takes time and patience (legal tasks take time and patience too).

Last week we finally secured an LP partner but it took time!

It feels good to be traveling along the same path as a market disruptor like Henry Ford.

…Like Ford we are going to get that license!

This week was pivotal for Province. We officially closed our seed round financing and closed a huge deal with Cannabis Wheaton. We are already moving forward to starting our application with Health Canada.

It is easy to reach milestones like this and not take a moment to make note of how far we have come. I just want to thank our hard working and dedicated team for getting us to this place.

Steve Jobs once said the following:

There needs to be someone who is the keeper and reiterator of the vision.... A lot of times, when you have to walk a thousand miles and you take the first step, it looks like a long way, and it really helps if there's someone there saying 'Well, we're one step closer.... The goal definitely exists; it's not just a mirage out there.

Achievements like the closing of the CBW deal are a great reminder that we are one step closer to our goal of extending and solidifying our current market leadership position.

During New Years my Founder’s Update said:

Happy New Year. This year we are more ready than ever to make Province a success. We are looking forward to getting our beer in stores, working on the LP partnership, moving into a proper office space, and going public. It is going to be a great year.

We are working on all of those items but this week we are truly ramping up to find an office.

We could really use help and advice in this area. Our goal is to find a short term lease space until we build our brewery which will house our permanent offices.
